
Skeeters and Galainena Win Singles Titles at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) and freshman Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) both captured their respective singles flight brackets as the Davidson women's tennis team competed at the Virginia Tech Invitational over the weekend, Oct. 5-7.
In all, nine Wildcats competed over the weekend in their second fall invitational of the season.
Skeeters advanced all the way to the finals in the flight D singles bracket with a first round win over Emma Czarnecki and a 6-3, 6-1 second round win. She then picked up a three-set win, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, over Hannah Fick, before taking home the singles title by securing another three-set victory by the score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Marshall's Kassie Moore. It was the second invitational in a row the senior had advanced to the finals in her respective singles bracket.
"Skeeters showed great composure and determination in both her semifinal and final matches, coming back from a set down," said head coach Caroline Price. "the senior displayed great maturity on the court and a mentality of battle until the end."
Galainena reached her first finals in her second invitaitional this fall when she raced past Sarah Ahmed of Virginia Tech, 6-0, 6-0, and then earned a default win to advance to the finals. She then took home the flight E singles title with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Fabiana Gouveia of Louisville.
Senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) also had a nice showings over the weekend in singles play. Linville and Berry each reached the finals on the consolation side of the flight A singles bracket. They were scheduled to play each other, but due to coaches decisions, were substituted with Virginia Tech opponents.
Linville rattled off wins of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-3 on the consolation side before taking home a 6-7(2), 6-1, 10-6 win over Brouwer of Virginia Tech in her finals match.
After dropping her first round match, 6-3, 6-3 vs. an Ohio State player, Berry sealed a trip to the consolation finals with 6-4, 6-4 and 6-1, 4-6, (10-6) wins over Yelena Fadina of Winthrop and Ivana Tomaic of Radford. Her run eventually ended in the consolation finals with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Beermann of Virginia Tech.
The duo of Linville and Berry also represented the Wildcats in the flight A doubles bracket and secured a win in the finals on the consolation of the losers side. They picked up 8-0 and 8-5 wins, and were in line to face fellow teammates senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) and sophomore Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) in the finals before that duo lost to Fadina and Wilkinson of Winthrop, 8-0. Linville and Berry though, secured a hard-fought 9-8(2) win over the Winthrop duo to earn the finals win.
In the flight B singles bracket, freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) reached the semifinals with a first round 7-5, 6-0 win and a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Aditi Krishnan of Eastern Michigan in the second round. The freshman's run ended when she dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Angela DiPastina of Ohio State in the semfinals.
Whelan and junior Lora Dushanova (Silven, Bulgaria) each competed in the flight C singles bracket. Whelan earned a first round three-set win, and after dropping a 6-1, 6-0 decision in the second round, came back with a 6-7(7), 6-2, 10-8 win over Catherina Bestehorn of Eastern Michigan on the winners side consolation.
Dushanova advanced to the semifinals of the losers bracket consolation and scored a third-place finish with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jenn Tucci of Elon.
The junior also teamed up with Rauh in doubles action and picked up a first round win by the score of 8-3 in the flight B doubles bracket. After falling 8-4 to a team from Ohio State, the duo came right back with an 8-6 win over Butcher and Kensrue of Elon.
"Overall, another great weekend for the girls against some very tough competition," said Price. "I think we realized after this weekend, we can compete against anyone and be very successful. We'll take what we've gained from this invitational and finish up with another tough tournament at South Carolina in a couple of weeks."
Davidson takes a few weeks off before heading down to the South Carolina tournament on the 26th of October for its third and final fall tournament.
