CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Juniors Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) each reached the finals of their respective singles brackets, with Myers capturing the Garnet C singles title as Wildcat men's tennis team competed at the UNC Invitational over the weekend.
Five Wildcat players advanced pass the first round on Friday in singles action.
Jaffee started the weekend off with a a three-set 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Kyle Baker of UNC in the Green B singles bracket, before cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 quarterfinal win over Ernesto Ramos of Coastal Carolina on Saturday. He later won a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-0 three-setter to advance to the finals on Sunday. Jaffee's bid for the singles title in the Green B bracket was halted by Karl Wishart, who defeated the junior 6-4, 6-4.
Like Jaffee, Myers started the weekend off strong with two victories of 6-1, 6-1 and 7-6(3), 6-3 in the opening and quarterfinal rounds. He then advanced to the finals in the Garnet C singles bracket with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over a player from Elon. From there, Myers cruised with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jeff Archer of Charlotte to win his singles bracket and the first for the Wildcats this fall.
Also representing Davidson at the invitational was sophomore Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.), and the highly-touted freshmen duo of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.). Lyons and Hefter were part of Davidson's top-25 recruiting class among mid-majors.
For the second weekend in a row, Burns advanced to the semifinals in his singles bracket. He opened play on Friday by taking a three-set 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-1win over Roshan Potarazu of Maryland. The sophomore then picked up a second three-set win in the quarterfinal round, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, before seeing his weekend come to an end with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Elon's Chase Helpingstine in the semifinals of the Orange C singles bracket.
Lyons and Hefter, who both were playing in their first collegiate matches, each earned first-round wins in their respective singles brackets. Lyons got a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alex Glass of Charlotte and Hefter earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory Paul Boslet of Radford.
Despite dropping a three-set first round match on Friday, senior Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) advanced all the way to the finals on the consolation side of the White A singles bracket and took home a 7-6(4), 7-6(3) win in the finals.
Davidson takes a week off before next heading to the Georgia Tech Invitational for the weekend starting on Oct. 5.
