CULLOWHEE, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team opened Southern Conference play with a 3-0 loss (30-16, 30-18, 30-24) to Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
With the loss, the 'Cats fall to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Western improves to 6-12 overall and an even 2-2 in the SoCon.
The Catamounts had a pair of hitters in double figures, as Ali Rook (12) and Meredith Harmon (10) paced the Western attack.
Junior middle blocker Kittery Neale led the 'Cats with nine kills while hitting .316.
The Catamounts took the first point of game one and would lead the rest of the way. Freshman outside hitter Sarabeth Peele evened the score at 1-1, but Western won the next six points to open up a 7-2 lead. The Catamounts added a 12-2 run and used a commanding 17-4 lead for a 30-16 game win.
Senior outside hitter Katie Pierucci put away the first point of the second game, and though the 'Cats would surrender the lead, blocks from junior Brittany Narr and freshman Jorden Benedict and a kill from Neale would keep things close. Back-to-back Catamont errors knotted the score at five, but Western went on a 10-5 run to open up a 15-7 lead, before winning the second game 30-18.
As the teams traded points to start game three, the 'Cats were within one on seven separate occasions but unable to take a lead. Trailing 18-14, Davidson won three straight to get within one, 18-17, on a kill from Neale, but the Catamounts answered with a 6-2 run to pull ahead 24-19. The 'Cats came out of a timeout and put together a 6-1 run, but the Catamounts regrouped after their own timeout and won the match with a 30-24 victory.
Davidson will continue its two-match West swing with a 2 p.m. match tomorrow at Chattanooga.
