TUSCON, ARIZ. — Freshman Sarabeth Peele picked up a combined 21 kills and was named to the all-tournament team, but the Davidson Wildcats volleyball team dropped their final two matches at the Arizona Invitational. Davidson fell 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-26) to Cal State Bakersfield and then closed out the invitational by dropping a 3-0 decision (30-21, 30-16, 30-21) to host Arizona on Saturday afternoon.

Davidson saw its overall record fall to 5-7, while Cal State Bakersfield improved to 4-9 and Arizona moved to 10-2.

In the first match, the 'Cats were in all three games against the Roadrunners, hitting at a .232 clip (40 kills on 99 swings), including a .310 hitting percentage in game one. Peele and senior Katie Pierucci finished in double digits with 15 and 13 kills, respectively, and Pierucci chipped in a team-best 13 digs as well.

Peele and Pierucci brought the 'Cats back from a seven-point deficit in game one when they picked up back-to-back kills to bring the score to 15-12. Cal State Bakersfield though, pushed the lead out to nine, 24-15, on a service ace before closing out the game-one win on a kill from Sarah Norman.

Davidson jumped out to a 5-2 lead in game two, but the Roadrunners went on a 7-4 run to take a 10-8 lead and force the Wildcats into a timeout. Davidson got back in the game behind a 6-3 run, within one at 20-19, but Gabe Curtis served seven straight points to lift Cal State Bakersfield to a 30-21 win in game two.

The 'Cats trailed from the beginning in game three, but managed to stay close throughout. But with Davidson down just 20-18, the Roadrunners began to pull away, and a Jodi Hardin putaway delivered the match with a 30-26 win.

Pierucci nearly turned in a double-double in the 'Cats matchup with the Arizona Wildcats, pacing the team with nine kills and nine digs. But the other 'Cats got 15 kills from Randy Goodenough, who hit .423 in the match and added six blocks.

Arizona led from the start of game one and only extended that lead for a 30-21 win. In game two, the 'Cats stayed with the Wildcats, trailing by just one at 11-10, before Arizona started to pull away with four straight points behind the serve of Brooke Buringrud. Leading 24-16, the Wildcats closed out with six straight points for a 30-16 win to take the 2-0 advantage in the match.

The Wildcats opened the third game with a 12-4 run to take a commanding lead. Davidson kept fighting, but found the early lead too much, as the Wildcats clinched the match with a 30-21 win in game three.

Davidson will return to Belk Arena to host Winthrop at 7 p.m. on Tues., Sept. 18.
