
Peele Propels Wildcat Men Past Gardner-Webb for First Win of the Season

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Junior Merritt Peele won three individual titles to lead the Wildcat men's swimmers to their first dual-meet victory, 120-82, and freshman Lindsey Martin improved her own school record in the 50 free, but the Wildcat women fell by a margin of 121.5-83.5 in dual-meet with Gardner-Webb on Friday night in CCSA action in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Wildcat women snap a three-meet winning streak and even their dual-meet record to 3-3, while the Wildcat men improve to 1-4 with their first win of the season.
Peele picked up wins in the 100, 200 and 1000 freestyle events to lead the Wildcat men, who picked up six individual wins and a pair of relay titles. He finished first in the 100 with a time of 48.50, placed first with a season-high time of 1:43.82 in the 200, and outtouched the field in 9:53.10 in the 1000.
Sophomore Miller Williams won the 100 fly in a time of 52.47, while junior Scott Frantz was first in the 100 back with a season-best time of 52.44. Senior Will Broughton wraps up the title winners on the men's side with a first-place finish in the 500 free in a time of 4:51.65.
Frantz grouped with senior Fiete Stegger, Williams and junior Andrew Carlson for a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.95, while the 'Cats team of Frantz, junior Miguel Rodriguez and freshmen Tennant Brastow and Patrick Whitman turned in the top time in the 200 free relay (1:29.07).
On the women's side, Martin bested her own school mark with another winning time of 23.71 in the 50 free. Her previous best of 23.75 was on Oct. 27 at Wingate. The school record holder in the 100 free, Martin also won that event with a time of 52.85.
Fellow classmate Anna Stringfield continued her impressive rookie campaign with a win in the 400 individual medley behind a time of 4:35.20.
The final win for the Wildcat women was the 200 freestyle relay team of freshmen Emily Castle, Jessica Delgehausen and Alexa Richardson and sophomore Caitlin Sheetz, who finished first in a time of 1:41.48.
The Wildcat swimming and diving teams will return to action next weekend as they host the Davidson Invitational.
