GAMBIER, Ohio — The Wildcats broke three individual records and three relay records, and freshman Lindsey Martin swam an NCAA Championship B cut time on the final day of competition at the Nike Invitational on the campus of Kenyon College.
A day after a pair of record-setting performances, Martin turned in yet another record swim in the 100 free. She finished third in the preliminaries with a time of 51.93 to advance to the Super Final, while bettering her own record (52.17). In the evening session, Martin shaved another second off her time, lowering the event record to 50.82 with a runner-up finish and NCAA Championship B cut time (50.90 for Division I). It is the second such performance in Wildcat history; Megan Hollar did the same in the 200 breaststroke at the 2006 CAAs.
"I'm exceedingly proud of what Lindsey has accomplished already," head coach John Young said. "Her B-cut is a nice benchmark, but most special is her presence as a teammate. We enjoyed a great team effort this weekend!"
Both the men's and women's teams finished the Invite in fifth place, with the women amassing 485 points to 309 for the men. The University of Kansas women's team claimed the Invite title with 1090.5 points, while host Kenyon took the men's title with 1242.5 points. Over the course of the three-day meet, the Wildcat swimmers set 14 new school records against some of their toughest competition of the season.
“We hoped that this meet would provide our Wildcats a forum for performances at our season's midpoint,” head coach John Young said. "The team embraced the opportunity and executed on a really fun weekend of racing. Setting a dozen Davidson College records speaks for itself - it was a fun weekend, but now its back to work preparing for our conference meet."
Freshmen Emily Castle broke the first record of the final day for the Wildcat women, as she swam 57.79 in the 100 fly in the morning preliminary heat for a spot in the Super Final. In the evening session, Castle bettered the record yet again, finishing fourth with a time of 57.62. The record was previously held by Courtney Sanders (57.87) from the 2006 CAAs.
Junior Alanna Ream bettered her school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.81 in the consolation final. Ream's time was better than the last two swimmers in the Super Final, but as her prelim time (5:08.68) kept her out of that heat, she finished seventh in the event. She previously set the record (5:00.83) at the 2007 CAAs.
The Wildcats set three relay records on the final day of competition. Both A teams rewrote the Davidson record in the 400 freestyle relay, while the men's team did the same in the 200 medley relay.
In the 400 free relay, junior Courtney Sanders and freshmen Castle, Jessica Delgehausen and Martin shattered the previous record with a second-place time of 3:30.69. Hollar, Kirsten Allen, Sanders and Kristen Shields swam the previous best (3:32.23) at the 2006 CAAs.
In the men's 400 free relay, juniors Scott Frantz, Miguel Rodriguez and Andrew Carlson paired with senior Fiete Stegger to finish fifth in a school-record time of 3:06.30. Brad Poole, Rodriguez, Jon Smith and Stegger held the record (3:06.40) from the 2006 CAAs.
Frantz, Stegger, sophomore Miller Williams and Rodriguez set the third relay record of the day with a fourth-place time of 1:33.77 in the 200 medley relay, breaking a record that had stood since Feb. 13, 1998. Terry Dolch, Matt Lake, Scott Harper and Bill Patterson made up the previous record-holding team.
In the morning's prelims, the Wildcats earned 26 swims in the evening session and were represented in four Super Finals. Along with Castle and Martin, classmate Anna Stringfield earned a spot in the Super Final with a fifth-place time of 2:08.5 in the 200 IM. She finished sixth with a time of 2:08.89.
Junior Scott Frantz grabbed the final Super Final spot for the 'Cats, finishing fourth in the 200 backstroke with a prelim time of 1:51.78. He finished sixth in the nightcap with a time of 1:52.02.
