"Georgia Tech is a very good basketball team. Their freshmen are exceptional and the team is well rounded. We understand and love the challenge that is before us, and our practices have been geared toward defense as it always is at this time of year."
On the exhibition game —
"Our current injury situation is presenting players with opportunities to contribute in big ways, and I was well pleased with the response last night in our exhibition game."
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson opened the season with an impressive 89-50 exhibition win over St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Tuesday. Six players scored in double figures, led by freshman Kelsey Cary's (Anselmo, Calif.) 18 points off the bench. Davidson, coming off a school-record 23 wins and its first postseason appearance last year, placed four of its five starters in double digits as well with senior co-captain Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) netting 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a 3-for-5 performance from behind the arc. Davidson as a team dropped in 12 three-balls in 30 attempts to shoot 40 percent from behind the arc.
Junior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) registered a double-double in the win, pulling down a game-high tying 10 rebounds to go along with her 11 points. She showed her range from outside, hitting two of her four three-ball attempts.
With the return of nine letterwinners, including senior co-captain starters Katie Hamilton and Hemerka, from last year's school-record 23-win season, Davidson was picked to finish third in the coaches Southern Conference preseason poll.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
Georgia Tech, who was picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference this year, returns four-of-five starters and eight letterwinners from the 2006-07 team that finished with a 21-12 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
The Yellow Jackets played an exhibition on Sunday against Team Reebok, a group of Premier Players, and came up one point short in an 80-79 loss. The Jackets placed five players in double-figures with Janie Mitchell's 21 points leading the way.
Mitchell along with Chioma Nnamaka return from the starting lineup for Georgia Tech. Both players averaged in double digits, while hauling in a combined average of nearly six boards a game between both of them.
