WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After leading just 1-0 at the half, No. 2 Wake Forest found the back of the net four times in an eight minute span to defeat Davidson 5-1 in men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Frye Stadium. Wake improves to 14-1-2 with the triumph, while the loss was the third straight for the Wildcats dropping them to 4-13-1.
"We lost to a great team - probably the best team in the nation," commented Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "Their speed of play is awesome."
With the match scoreless through 40 minutes of action, the Demon Deacons' Zack Schilawski scored his first of two consecutive to send his club into the break with the advantage.
"To be honest, the first half was very even. We had our chances, and our game plan and composure was going well."
Just 15 minutes into the final stanza, Wake put the game away with three goals in two minutes to extend its margin to 4-0. Schilawski struck at the 60:20 mark and Cody Arnouz, the ACC's leading scoring, recorded his 11th and 12th strikes on the season 33 seconds apart.
"60 minutes into the game it was 1-0, and we were in a good position to make a late comeback for a tie. But then the walls caved in - I have never been a part of something like that. Conceding three goals in two minutes was back-breaking. Then they scored a few minutes later. Other than those 5-6 minutes, I was pleased. But letting our guard down for that critical stretch doomed our chances."
Jeff Leach added Wake's final goal of the evening with 22:35 left in the contest.
Davidson had several on target shots, including a header from Robby Hoak that ricocheted off the post and nearly put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the first half. But it was Wildcat Robert O'Donnell who made the lone Davidson goal in the 76th minute with a left side run that ended with a short 8-yard shot in the right pocket of net.
"If we score on the Robby's header off the post, that would have clearly shifted the momentum our way, and made Wake have to chase the game."
The Demon Deacons finished with a 13-4 advantage in shot attempts and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Making his fifth consecutive start in net for the Wildcats, Matt McElroy finished with a pair of saves, while Brian Edwards turned away the only shot he faced on frame.
Davidson will travel to UNC Greensboro for the for the opening round of the 2007 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. Wake Forest hosts conference foe Virginia in its regular season finale Friday evening.
