DAVIDSON, N.C. — Fresh off a its third regular-season tournament title in the past four years, the Davidson women's basketball team looks to carry that momentum into its battle with cross-county rival Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. The Wildcats last trip to Halton Arena resulted in a 79-60 defeat two years ago.
The Opening Tip
The Wildcats play their fourth straight road game to open the season when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a matchup against the cross county rival Charlotte 49ers on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The all-time series is 10-9 in favor of the Wildcats after they earned a 75-69 win over the 49ers last Dec. 9 to snap a three-game losing streak in the series. Three players scored in double figures for Davidson, led by Jessica Mitchell's 23 points, 15 of them from behind the three-point line.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson picked up victories against host UNC Asheville (69-56) and Georgia State (59-42) at the Carolina First Classic last weekend to capture its third in-season tournament title under head coach Annette Watts.
Leading the way was tournament MVP freshman Kelsey Cary (Anselmo, Calif.) and all-tournament team member sophomore Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.). Cary, who tallied a team season-high 23 points in the win over the Bulldogs on Friday, finished the weekend with 31 points, 20 rebounds (season-best 12 vs. Panthers on Sat.), four assists and two steals to earn MVP. The freshman hit 10-of-15 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from downtown.
Thompson thrilled her hometown fans for two days with numerous nice passes, clutch shots and some hard-nosed Wildcat defense. The 'Cats point guard finished the two-day classic with double-double numbers: 15 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists to earn all-tourney honors.
Junior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) tallied her fifth career double-double (career-high 19 pts./11 rebs.) in the win over Ga. State in the championship game. She is averaging 10 points and five rebounds, respectively, per game.
With the two wins last weekend, Watts earned her 100th and 101st of her coaching career at Davidson. She needs just two more to pass John Filar (102) to become the all-time winningest coach in program history.
Scouting the 49ers
Charlotte, who advanced to the second round of the WNIT last season, picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday with a 72-47 win over Hampton in its home opener at Halton Arena. The 49ers dropped their first five contests by an average score of 76-64 as they lost to Pittsburgh, Penn State, Arizona, Wake Forest and Old Dominion.
With her game-high 13 point contribution, guard Sabrina Gregory joined the 1,000 career points club, marking the 15th 49er in Charlotte history to hit the mark.
Gregory, who anchored the 49ers with her 13 points and six rebounds, was joined by Burgin (12 points, 8 rebounds) and Stywalt (11 points, 4 rebounds) in double-figure scoring.
Against the Wildcats last season, Gregory paced Charlotte with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Burgin led the team in rebounding with 11 boards, while chipping in with six points and two blocks. Burgin is averaging close to a double-double this year with a 13.2 points per game average and 9.5 rebounds per contest.
Halton Arena has been a black hole for opponents who come visiting. The 49ers, who were picked to finish tied for second in the Atlantic 10, has posted a 68-12 record in Halton Arena over the past five years. During that stretch, the 49ers have made five straight postseason tournament appearances and have posted first-round WNIT victories at home in each of the last two years.
Head coach Karen Aston is in her first season at Charlotte after being an associate head coach at Baylor last year. Prior to that position, Aston spent eight seasons at Texas as an assistant coach.
