DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Wildcat swimming and diving teams set a pair of meet records and combined for four individual titles on the final day of the 2007 Davidson Invitational. The Wildcat women finished third of nine teams, while the men's team placed fourth of five.
The Gardner-Webb women's team won the Davidson Invitational, followed by Old Dominion and the Wildcats. The Old Dominion men placed first, followed by the College of Charleston, Gardner-Webb and the Wildcats.
Sophomore Miller Williams was the highlight of the day for the Wildcat men, placing first in the 100 fly with a meet-record time of 51.11. Davidson's Brad Poole previously held the Invite record in the event with a time of 51.90 from 2005.
For a third day, the Wildcat women set a new meet record in a relay event, as freshmen Anna Stringfield, Lindsey Martin, Jessica Delgehausen and Emily Castle placed first in the 400 freestyle relay in an Invitational-record time of 3:33.71. Gardner-Webb set the previous standard last season with a time of 3:33.82.
Martin won her second title of the weekend with a time of 52.24 in the 100 free, while Stringfield picked up her third win with a time of 2:08.12 in the 200 IM. Stringfield also placed third in the 200 back with a time of 2:05.65, better than the previous meet record. ODU's April Barrientos placed first and set the new standard in the event with a time of 2:04.13.
The Wildcat women had a good day on the boards as well, taking second and third place in the 1-meter diving event. Sophomores Kelsey Chisholm and Linnea Buttermore took second and third with scores of 219.90 and 215.95, respectively.
Several Invitational records fell on the final day of competition. Gardner-Webb set a new record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.41, replacing James Madison's record of 1:49.79 from 2004.
The College of Charleston men's team also set a pair of relay records with a time of 1:35.82 in the 200 medley relay and a time of 3:09.59 in the 400 freestyle relay. The Wildcat men's team of juniors Andrew Carlson, Scott Frantz and Miguel Rodriguez and senior Fiete Stegger placed second in the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:10.02, also better than the previous meet standard.
ODU's Patrik Balint turned in the final meet record with a first-place time of 1:48.38 in the 200 back, besting IUPA's Pavel Glowiak's mark of 1:54.01.
The Wildcats will travel to Gambier, Ohio for the Nike Invitational at Kenyon College on Nov. 29.
