DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Lindsey Martin, Jessica Delgehausen, Caitlin Sheetz and Anna Stringfield kicked off the 2007 Davidson Invitational with a first-place finish in a meet and school-record time in the 800 freestyle relay on Friday evening at Cannon Natatorium.
Through four events, the Wildcat women sit in third place with 69 points in the nine-team field, while the Wildcat men are in second of four teams with 57 points.
The previous Davidson standard in the 800 freestyle relay team was set by Megan Hollar, Kirsten Allen, Courtney Sanders and Kristen Shields at the 2006 CAAs with a time of 7:41.73. Gardner-Webb held the previous Davidson Invitational record with a time of 7:40.60 in 2006.
"What a relay!" head coach John Young said. "All four women raced so tough. To enter this meet without much rest and kick off the weekend with a record-setting performance couldn't be more exciting."
The Wildcat men's team of seniors Will Broughton, Fiete Stegger, and Adam Topaz along with junior Andrew Carlson also finished first in the 800 freestyle relay in a time of 7:02.45.
Broughton turned in another strong performance with a runner-up finish in the 1650 freestyle behind a time of 16:29.63, while junior Alanna Ream and Sheetz were sixth and seventh in the event on the women's side with times of 17:40.28 and 17:48.19, respectively.
Gardner-Webb is leading on the women's side with 82 points, while the College of Charleston men are in first place with 67 points. Events continue tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m., and competition concludes on Sunday.
