
Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision at Elon

ELON, N.C. -- Senior outside hitter Katie Pierucci posted her ninth double-double of the season in a losing effort for the Davidson Wildcats, who fell 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-22) to the Elon Phoenix on the road in Southern Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
Pierucci tallied 17 kills to lead the Wildcat offense and contributed 11 digs to the defensive effort. With the loss, the 'Cats fall to 6-13 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Jessica Barrow led the Phoenix with 18 kills, as Elon moved to 11-10 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
The 'Cats stayed close to open the match when, trailing 12-11, Elon won three straight points to take a slight 15-11 lead. Davidson rallied to get within one again, 21-20, and forced the Phoenix into a timeout. Elon regrouped out of the break and put together a 9-1 run to finish out the game with a 30-21 win.
Elon controlled the second game from the beginning, turning a 9-3 early edge into a 22-9 commanding lead behind a five-point serve from Lauren Copenhagen. Davidson tried to get back in the game with a 9-5 run to move the score to 27-18, but Elon took the final three possessions for the 30-18 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The 'Cats won the first point of the third game, but the Phoenix answered with five straight scores to put Davidson in an early hole. With a tentative 16-12 lead, Elon put together a 4-0 run to pull ahead 19-12 and held for a 30-22 win for the match.
Davidson will return to action tomorrow in a noon match at UNC Greensboro (11-10, 4-3), who fell to Appalachian State, 3-2, earlier in the day.
