Box Score
Davidson, N.C. - Junior Nick Feldman caught nine passes for 141 yards and returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown to lead Morehead State to a 49-21 Pioneer Football League victory over Davidson Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Senior Ryan Alexander completed 22-of-44 passes for 276 yards and three TDs and added 36 yards on the ground for the Wildcats (3-2, 1-1 PFL), but had three interceptions on the afternoon.
Junior Myles Potter had five receptions for a career-high 105 yards and a touchdown, while classmate Kirk Konert caught six passes for 99 yards and a score. Freshman Daniel Astrop led the Davidson defense with eight tackles, a sack and a pass break-up, and junior Kwame Som-Pimpong had eight stops.
Brian Yost completed 19-of-28 passes for 244 yards and two scores for Morehead State (4-1, 2-0 PFL), and the multifaceted Eagle rushing attack ground out 156 yards.
Turnovers were the story as Davidson's three interceptions proved too costly to overcome, while the Eagles had just one giveaway. Morehead State's average field position in the first quarter was their own 47-yard line, and that helped them build a 17-7 cushion by the end of the frame. Trailing for a majority of the game, the Wildcats could never get their ground game going and managed just 66 rushing yards.
“Offensively, we didn't execute,” said Alexander. “Morehead State is a big, physical team and it seemed like there was one play each drive where we didn't get the job done, and that turned into 3rd-and-long situations.”
Trailing 27-14 at halftime, the Davidson defense got a three-and-out on the opening series of the second half, and the Wildcat offense responded with a methodical 13-play, 78-yard drive, which culminated in a 7-yard TD pass from Alexander to Konert to make the score 27-21.
The defense forced a punt on the Eagles' next possession and Davidson was moving the ball when Wes McDermott picked off an Alexander pass and returned it 13 yards to the Davidson 48. The Eagle offense took over from there and went 48 yards in eight plays, capped by a Yost touchdown pass to Erick Fitzpatrick for 19 yards and a 34-21 advantage.
Down 13 points with 7:44 to play, the 'Cats still had a chance after taking over at their own 20-yard line following a punt, but Davidson went three-and-out. Morehead State's Feldman fielded Cody Elder's punt at the 45-yard line, cut to the left and went down the sidelines for a TD and the knockout punch.
“Physically, they were a better football team than us today, and that showed in the fourth quarter. We were gassed,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “We thought we had a shot when we got it to six, but we couldn't get it done.”
After Alexander hit Potter for a 67-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game, Yost found Feldman for 72 yards and a score on Morehead State's first play from scrimmage.
On the Wildcats' next possession, Andrew Sturzenbecker intercepted Alexander's pass and went 48 yards to the 1-yard line where Alexander made a nice hustle play to save the immediate touchdown. The play did set up a Rick Cornelius 1-yard run to give the Eagles a 14-7 cushion. Mason Webb tacked on a 21-yard field goal to make the margin 17-7 at the end of the first stanza.
The lead would grow to 24-7 before Alexander found Ryan Hubbard for a 2-yard touchdown pass with 3:20 left in the half. That score was set up by senior Chris Hampton's interception and return to the MSU 18. Webb added a 33-yard field goal with 55 seconds remaining, and Morehead State held the 27-14 halftime advantage.
Davidson returns to action next Saturday when the Wildcats travel to Dayton for a 1 p.m. contest.
Notes: Alexander moved into second on the school's all-time passing list… Feldman has a punt return for a touchdown in each of the three games he has played against Davidson… Hampton's interception was the first of his career… The 'Cats streak of 61 passes without allowing a sack came to an end on the first play of the second quarter; Davidson has only allowed three sacks in five games… The 27 points allowed in the first half was the most since San Diego had 30 last season; the Toreros finished that game with 50 points… Potter's 67-yard reception was longest of his career… Davidson has three turnovers in four of five games this season.
