DAVIDSON, N.C. -- With the return of nine letterwinners, including senior co-captain starters Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) and Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.), from last year's school-record 23-win season, the Davidson women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the coaches Southern Conference preseason poll as announced by the league. In addition, Hamilton for the second straight year was honored with a spot on the 10-team preseason all-conference team as chosen by the head coaches.
Davidson, who was picked third last year as well, is coming off the program's first post-season appearance with a trip to the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
“Last year was a record setter for us,” exclaimed head coach Annette Watts, who enters her seventh season and is one win away from the century mark. “I felt good about how we played, but you always want a little bit more. Every team starts the season with a clean slate, and I definitely see last season's accomplishments as a great stepping stone to even bigger and better things to come this year.”
The Wildcats can be expected to challenge for the league title once again after finishing tied for second at 13-5 in 2006-07. It marked the third straight year the 'Cats finished second in league play and have gone a combined overall in the SoCon during Watts' six years.
Hamilton, who earned a spot on the all-conference second-team last year, led the 'Cats in scoring for the third time in her career with an average of 10.7 points per game, and was tops in the league in three-point accuracy, nailing 38.9 percent of her shots from behind the arc. She also surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career last season and ranks sixth overall in the Wildcat record books with 1,134 points.
After sharing the SoCon regular season crown and winning the league tournament title last season, Chattanooga was picked by the league's coaches to again repeat as champion. Chattanooga collected seven first-place votes and 79 points overall to edge out Western Carolina (three first-place votes and 75 total points) for the top spot in the poll. Davidson and UNC Greensboro were predicted to finish in third and fourth places, respectively, followed by Georgia Southern in fifth place and Appalachian State in sixth. Wofford, Elon, Furman and College of Charleston rounded out the poll.
Davidson opens up its season on Nov. 6 against St. Andrews College in an exhibition contest at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena, before heading to Georgia Tech on Nov. 9.
