COLUMBIA, S.C. — In their final scheduled fall event, the Davidson College women's tennis team finished out the fall season in impressive fashion by earning four singles titles and a doubles title over the weekend of Oct. 26-28 at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on the campus of South Carolina.
Taking home titles in singles play for the Wildcats was the senior duo of Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) and Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.), junior Lora Dushanova (Silven, Bulgaria) and freshman Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.).
Skeeters teamed up with freshman Alison Rauh (Tier, Germany) to capture the B-3 doubles title, and Dushanova Galainena nearly took home the C-1 doubles title before falling in the finals, 8-6.
Skeeters and Galainena finished out a strong fall season for the both of them by securing their second singles titles this fall. Skeeters, who won her flight at the Virginia Tech Invite, started the weekend with 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1 victories in the opening two rounds. She then battle two players from East Carolina, earning a hard fought 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in the semifinals before taking home the C-1 singles title with a straight set, 6-4, 6-2 win in the finals.
Galainena was very impressive in her first-round match, rattling off a 6-1, 6-1 win. She then battled through a three-setter against Colleen Speaker of West Virginia, before taking a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the semifinals. The freshman then concluded her first collegiate fall season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Christine Caforio of Georgia Southern to earn the singles title.
After dropping a 6-3 first-set match against Marla Chambers of Coastal Carolina, Whelan proceeded to get hot and rolled all the way to the B-3 singles title. She came back with 6-1, 6-1 wins in the next two sets to defeat Chambers and then dropped just seven games in her next three matches all the way to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the finals.
Dushanova picked up first-and second-round wins of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-3 to start her weekend. Like Skeeters, Dushanova had to go through two players from the same school, this time College of Charleston, to earn her singles title in the B-4 flight. She breezed through the semifinals and then came back from dropping the first set, 0-6, of her finals match against Amanda Becker to take 7-5, 6-1 wins in the next two sets for the title.
Sophomore Tresea Wang advanced to the finals of the B-2 singles bracket by winning her first three matches. Her weekend came to an end though in the finals, where she dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Mijana Jocic of South Carolina.
Rauh nearly met Wang in the finals of the same bracket, but fell to Jocic in the semifinals after earning 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-0 wins in the first two rounds.
