ATLANTA, Ga. – In an invitational of some of the top teams in the country, junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and the freshman duo of Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) and Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) of the Davidson men's tennis team held their own as they competed at the three-day Georgia Tech Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
Despite all three of them dropping their first round matches, the trio each played very well against players that usually play higher in the lineup compared to their position. Myers faced the number three overall singles seed, J. Mnguruza of Georgia Tech, and fell 6-1, 6-0. He then battled J. DeWeerdt of Georgia Southern in the consolation round and lost 6-4, 6-3.
Lyons played two three-setters in his two singles matches over the weekend. He first faced up against a player from Vanderbilt and was able to win the middle set, before falling in the end, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. In the freshman's consolation match, Lyons fell just short in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 loss to William Lang of Tennessee.
Hefter, who also played in the same bracket as Lyons, dropped a 6-1, 7-6(3) match to James Moye of Vanderbilt, before finishing out the invitational with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Alexander Arendt of Southern Mississippi in the consolation round.
Both Myers and Lyons teamed up in the "B" doubles bracket and won their first match by the score of 8-6 over Manrillo and Mills of Auburn. The duo then dropped their quarterfinal match, 8-4, to a duo from Tennessee.
Davidson now gears up for its own invitational when the Wildcats host the Jim Causey Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 12-13.
