Phil Trautwein joined the Davidson football coaching staff in March 2016. In February 2017, Trautwein was promoted by head coach Paul Nichols to special teams coordinator and retained his duties as tight ends coach. 

Prior to Davidson, Trautwein served as a graduate assistant at Boston College. In three seasons with the Eagles, Trautwein concentrated on the offensive line, tight end and fullback development and implementation of offensive schemes.
 
Prior to Boston College, Trautwein spent the spring of 2013 with the Florida Gators as an offensive line volunteer.
 
A 2007 graduate of the University of Florida, Trautwein was a two-time SEC and National Champion as an offensive tackle. He was one of three players to start both championship years as well as play in every game both championship years.
 
After a four-year standout collegiate career, Trautwein signed by the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent and spent three years in the National Football League, spending time with the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers.
 
Trautwein earned a bachelor’s degree in family, youth, and community sciences and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Florida, before earning a master’s degree in administrative studies from Boston College in 2014.
