Kaley Viola joined the staff of the Davidson volleyball team in May of 2014 after spending the previous season at nearby Winthrop.
"Kaley is a perfect fit for our volleyball family. She is committed to the vision of our program and college, and will help us during this time of transition," said Willis. "Her background in training athletes on the court and in the weight room will enhance our ability to prepare our players for competition in the A-10. Finally, Kaley has an infectious personality that will pay dividends when attracting future student-athletes to Davidson. We couldn't be more excited to welcome her."
A member of head coach Bruce Atkinson's staff for the 2013 season, Viola helped guide the Eagles to a 17-13 record, including wins over South Carolina, San Jose State and Atlantic 10 member Fordham. In addition to assisting with on-court coaching during practice and competitions, she was instrumental in Winthrop's academic success. Viola was in charge of monitoring all student-athletes and was in direct contact with the academic advisors.
"I am looking forward to working alongside Coach Willis. His dedication to build not only a highly competitive team, but also his commitment to foster both character and academic growth among his athletes are what attracted me to this college," said Viola. "I cannot think of a more exciting program to be a part of. I'm proud to call myself a Wildcat!"
Viola was in charge of all game film responsibilities, including film breakdown and video sharing. She also scheduled spring practices and lifting sessions and implemented numerous fundraising efforts, raising $2,000 over the course of the season.
Since 2011, Viola has also been a staff member of the Rock Hill Volleyball Club, where she was the head coach for the 14-, 15- and 16-year-old Power squads as well as the 14-3 club team. In this role she was in charge of developing team practices geared towards both individual and team improvements, as well as creating urgency and consistency in game situations. Viola has taught an introductory volleyball class at Winthrop and was a member of the Eagles' strength & conditioning staff where she coordinated programs for men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis.
Viola was a four-year member of the Winthrop volleyball team, twice earning all-conference second team accolades and serving as a team captain her senior year. She participated in community service projects such as Habitat for Humanity, Agape Senior Center and Children's Attention Home. Viola also worked various volleyball camps at Rollins, Winthrop and Clemson. She was a member of the Psi Chi Honor Society, Eagle All-Academic Team, Psychology Department Dean's List and Honor Roll as well as earning the NCAA Woman of the Year Award nominee for Winthrop. Viola earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in coaching in 2011 and completed a Master of Science in Sport and Fitness Administration in 2013.
The youngest of three children, Viola hails from an impressively athletic family. Her father, Frank, was the 1987 World Series MVP for the Minnesota Twins, the 1988 American League Cy Young Award winner and a three-time MLB All-Star while her mom, Kathy, is an avid equestrian who breeds and trains horses. Her brother, Frank IIII, was drafted by the Chicago White Sox and is currently a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, and sister Brittany was an NCAA diving champion for Miami (Fla.) who competed on the 2012 US Olympic Team.
