Matt Salerno begins his first season as an assistant swimming and diving coach with the Wildcats in 2008-09.
Salerno joins Davidson after spending the past five seasons in Fairfax, Va., where he was the head coach of the Fairfax High School swim and dive teams from 2003 until 2008. In 2008, the girls’ team won the Virginia state championship, the first state title for any sport in Fairfax’s 72-year history.
For his team’s achievements, Salerno was voted the 2008 Washington Post All-Met Coach-of-the-Year for Women’s swimming and diving.
“Matt's enthusiasm for the position here at Davidson was palpable, and as we learned about each other, it became clear that he is a young coach with tremendous potential,” Young said. “His team’s have swum well at each of their respective levels, and I expect no different from the students in his charge here at Davidson.”
In 2006, 2007, and 2008, the Lady Rebels also captured the Northern Virginia Regional Championship. The girls finished second in Virginia in 2006 and 2007 and compiled a record of 24-11 in Salerno’s five years as head coach. His boy’s team also improved tremendously, qualifying seven swimmers to compete at the state championship in 2008.
Salerno has served as a head age group coach for the Mason Makos Swim Club, guiding swimmers to Sectional, Senior Championship and Junior Olympic qualifying swims. He has also spent five years as the head coach of Villa Aquatic of the Northern Virginia Swim League, where his teams captured three relay carnival championships and a division championship, and swam to an undefeated season.
Salerno was the Coach-of-the-Year for Fairfax High School in 2006 and 2008 and the Coach-of-the-Year for the Mason Makos in 2006.
“Our athletes will identify with Matt’s own experience balancing academic rigor with athletic success, and that relationship will enable him to cooperate creatively with them in their race preparation,” Young said. “The team is excited to have him!”
Salerno graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2003 with his Bachelor of Sciences in Psychology and Elementary Education. He swam for the Tribe during his four years in Williamsburg and was elected captain for his senior year in 2002-2003.
Salerno was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. He is currently completing his Masters degree in Supervision and Administration from the University of Virginia.
