With close to 20 years experience at the NCAA Division I level, Kelly Findley is in his first season as associate head coach of the Davidson men’s soccer team.
“I have known Kelly as a friend and admired Kelly as a colleague for many, many years,” said Head Coach Matt Spear. “It's a massive lift to add his experience, his ideas, his ambition to Davidson. Kelly's tremendous success at a mid-major (Butler) and then running a "Power Five" program in the ACC (NC State) underlines his vast recruiting network, cutting edge tactics and leadership qualities. Kelly believes in the student-athlete formula and he appreciates our holistic teaching approach. And he's a character driven family guy.”
Findley joins the Wildcats after a one-year stint with the Sporting Kansas City Development Academy.
Prior to his most recent position, Findley was the head coach at N.C. State (2011-16) and Butler (2006-2010), where he compiled a 104-76-28 record.
“I am excited to join the staff and work with Coach Matt Spear,” said Findley. “I have had the opportunity to see Davidson College Men’s Soccer from many different perspectives and have always admired the program and school. The commitment to excellence, work ethic and quality of the staff and students has always been evident and I look forward to being part of the program, athletic department and college.”
He was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year in both 2009 and 2010, after guiding the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament both seasons.
Findley’s 2010 Butler squad entered the NCAA Tournament ranked fifth nationally, and was one of only two unbeaten teams in the nation before finishing 16-1-3 overall.
While on the Wolfpack sideline, Findley and his staff put together three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, including 2014, which was ranked third in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Before his time at Butler, Findley coached at Charlotte (2001-05) where he served three seasons as an assistant coach and two seasons as associate head coach.
Findley enjoyed a standout collegiate career, as he was a four-time Most Valuable Player at Judson College in Elgin, Ill. He was a three-time NAIA All-American, a three-time NCCAA All-American and a two-time NSCAA All-American as a midfielder. In addition, he was named the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year three consecutive seasons, and named Judson's Athlete of the Year in 1990.
Findley helped Judson to its first NCCAA National Championship in 1991, and finished his collegiate career fifth on Judson's all-time assist list with 48. He was named to Judson's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
Following his collegiate career, Findley played professional soccer for the Charlotte Eagles for six seasons (1991-96). He helped the Eagles to three South Atlantic Division Championships, five divisional playoff appearances, and two trips to the national finals.
Findley holds a USSF "A" license, a NSCAA Premier Diploma.
He and his wife, Joanne, have five children, Gabriel, Elysia, Corinne, Stephen and Keane.
