Men's Soccer

Richard Butler
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Richard Butler enters his second season as an assistant coach on the Davidson men’s soccer staff.
“I'm excited to be around college soccer again after a nine year break,” Butler commented. “I'm looking forward to working with players that have a great background in soccer whether it be with their youth club teams or as older players within the Davidson program. It will be fun and rewarding to work with the staff here and the experiences in the soccer world that they bring to the group. Looking at the schedule it looks like it will be a wonderful test of soccer skill throughout the season given the caliber of teams we will play.”
This Fall, along with his role at Davidson, Richard will be analyzing and counseling the Charlotte Soccer Academy's younger age groups.
His main duties the past few years at CSA have been to oversee and serve as head coach of the U18 and U16 US Soccer Developmental Academy.
“I am super pleased to have Richard on our staff as I have worked with and highly respected him for many years,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “He’s been a member of our summer camps in the past, plus he’s worked with many of the top youth players in the Charlotte area. In fact, he coached our Nathan Marder and Aidan Peterson – plus Drew Brown who graduated in May 2015 – at Charlotte Soccer Academy.
With his vast coaching experiences and excellent pedigree, Richard adds far more than just another set of eyes. He will absolutely provide wonderful feedback, keen insights, and helpful ideas for both the players and to our staff.”
Prior to joining the CSA, Butler spent time in Williamsburg, Va., as the Director of Coaching for the Williamsburg Soccer Club (VA) from 1992 to 2006 - including head coach/general manager of the Legacy, the club's PDL team. He was then an assistant coach at William & Mary from 2006-07.
A native of London, England and an Arsenal supporter, Butler was a four-year starter and two-year captain for the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB).
Butler holds the US Soccer A License, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Premier Diploma and in 2007 was named a National Staff coach for the NSCAA.
