D.J. Wingate
Marshall '10
2nd Season
Recruiting Areas: Florida (area codes 352, 386, 850, 904), North Carolina (area code 910), South Carolina.
D.J. Wingate is in his second season as the Davidson defensive backs coach.
Under Wingate's guidance, Davidson's defense ranked fourth in the Pioneer Football League in passing yards alowed (230.9).
This is not Wingate's first time working with head coach Paul Nichols, as Nichols was Wingate’s position coach when he was a defensive back as a student-athlete at Marshall during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
“He is one of the finest young men I have ever had the opportunity to coach," said Nichols. "I am so excited to have the chance to work with him. He has a passion to help young people and his energy is contagious. He adds significant value to our football family.”
Wingate came to Davidson after serving as a member of the coaching staff at the University of South Florida for two seasons. He joined USF as a program assistant for the 2011 season and then served as a graduate assistant for the Bulls last year.
Wingate arrived at USF after spending the 2011 spring season as a volunteer assistant in the secondary at Marshall.
A 2010 graduate of Marshall who double majored in marketing and management, Wingate played four seasons with the Thundering Herd in the secondary. He appeared in 34 games, posting 45 tackles and 13 pass breakups during his career. He hails from Daytona Beach, Fla.
