‘Cats Rally Late, Fall at Former SoCon Rival, 3-2

GREENVILLE, S.C. – In addition to a pair of goals from Diego Hernandez, Furman held off a late charge from former Southern Conference rival Davidson, to edge the Wildcats, 3-2, in the annual Gray Griffin Memorial Match Thursday evening at inside Stone Stadium.
The setback drops the 'Cats to 2-2-0 on the young season, while the Paladins remain unbeaten improving to 3-0-2.
Not long after both teams went a man down in the 12th minute, the Wildcats had consecutive chances to take the early lead, but Braylen Young and Nico Quanbeck's attempts were stopped.
Midway through the opening half, the Paladins took a 1-0 advantage on a goal from Diego Hernandez that was set up by Caleb Johnson.
Hernandez would find the back of the net again with a right-footed shot just before intermission to extend Furman's lead.
Less than two minutes after Davidson's Myles Culley cut the deficit in half with a blast from the top of the box, the Paladins answered with an 84th strike from Wilfer Bustamante to all but put the game out of reach.
Culley would later assist on Quanbeck's first goal of the 2025 season.
Quanbeck led the way for Davidson with four attempts, all coming on frame.
This evening's meeting was the 61st all-time between the two programs.

Davidson will continue it three-game road swing next Friday as the Wildcats open league play at nationally-ranked George Mason at 7 p.m.
