Davidson Heads to James Madison for WBIT Opening Round

DAVIDSON - The Davidson women's basketball team is set to make its debut in the Women's Baskeball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) at 7 p.m. Thursday at No. 1 seed James Madison.

LAST TIME OUT...
The Wildcats got off to a strong start in the A-10 Tournament as Charlise Dunn scored a game-high 16 points and Davidson forced 29 turnovers as the 'Cats cruised past Dayton, 56-36, in the quarterfinals. Dunn also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. She was joined in double figures by senior point guard Issy Morgan, who had 13 points.

However, Davidson's first trip to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament ended at that juncture as second-seeded George Mason topped the No. 3 Wildcats 63-50 March 8 at the Henrico Sports and Events Center. Katie Donovan led Davidson with 16 points, while Dunn added 14.

REGULAR SEASON RECAP...
The Wildcats conclude the regular season winning eight of their last nine to improve to 18-12 and program-best 13-5 in A-10 play. For the second consecutive season and the third time under the leadership of Coach Gayle Fulks, the Wildcats tallied 18 regular-season victories. Davidson's 13-5 A-10 record is the best since the 2012-13 season when it was 16-4. 

ALL THE ACCOLADES...
Four Davidson players earned a spot in the Atlantic 10 postseason awards: 

Charlise Dunn - All-Conference Second Team
Issy Morgan - All-Conference Third Team
Kyra Bruyndoncx - All-Rookie Team
Candice Lienafa - All-Rookie Team

The honors were the second of such for Dunn who was on the All-Conference Third Team a season ago and Morgan who was an All-Rookie member her freshman year. 

BROKEN RECORD IN THE ROOM...
In its final stretch of the regular season Davidson put its "Share, Shoot, Stifle" mantra at the forefront, torching the nets from distance and breaking the programs single-season record in made 3-pointers with a new total of 241, passing the previous best of 216 from the 2018-19 season. 

POSTSEASON HITS...
Davidson's last postseason appearance was in 2022-23, where it was the consolation bracket champion in the Women's Basketball Invite (WBI). Additionally, the Wildcats most recent trip to the WNIT came in the 2012-13 season where it defeated old Dominion in the first round before falling to in-state rival Charlotte in the second round. 

ALL-TIME AGAINST JAMES MADISON...
The Dukes hold a 3-0 lead in the all-time series over Davidson with the most recent meeting between the two teams being an 87-45 James Madison victory in Harrisonburg, Va. Dec. 30, 2015. Additionally, the Wildcats and Dukes have met in the postseason before, with James Madison ultimately taking a 64-49 win at the WNIT March 15, 2012. 

SCOUTING THE DUKES...
The Dukes have made 24 appearances in postseason tournaments, including 13 trips to the NCAA Women's Basketball Championships. James Madison rounded out the regular season on a 20-game winning streak before falling in the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. 

The Dukes own four top-15 marks nationally: defensive rebounds per game (4th - 30.5), three-point percentage (4th - 25.9), rebounds per game (7th - 43.06) and field goal percentage defense (11th - 36.0).

As a team, James Madison is shooting .431 from the field, .296 from 3-point range and .738 at the foul line while averaging 73.6 points and 43.1 rebounds per contest. The Dukes have four players who average double-figure scoring in Peyton McDaniel (16.5), Kseniia Kozlova (12.3), Ro Scott (11.3) and Ashanti Barnes (10.5). McDaniel also leads James Madison on the boards with 8.5 rebounds per game in addition to shooting .449 from the floor and. .850 at the charity stripe. 

A LOOK AHEAD...
The winner of the Davidson / James Madison game will face the winner of the Drake / Marquette game in the second round on March 23 at a site that is yet to be determined.
