SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- One of the most decorated golfers in program history, former Davidson College standout Alex Heffner '24, fired a two-under 69 Tuesday at Mid-Pines Inn & Golf Course to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship.
A native of Harrisburg, N.C., Heffner finished the day with six birdies before earning a spot in the 312-player field via a playoff.
Fellow Wildcats Davis Sayman and Brian Garrett '23 missed the cut at the same final qualifying site, while rising senior Will Davis will attempt to join Heffner next week.
A three-time all-conference performer, Heffner was twice named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year during his collegiate career.
Heffner is the first Wildcat to qualify since Garrett and Ethan Hall '23 played in the historic event in 2021.
The 124th U.S. Amateur Championship will take place Aug. 12-18 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
The starting field for the U.S. Amateur Championship will play 18 holes of stroke play on Aug. 12 and 13, with one round at Hazeline and one at Chaska Town Course, after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scores. Six rounds of match play begin on Wednesday, Aug. 14, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole championship match on Sunday, Aug. 18.
