CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Prior to the final round being suspended due to rain, Davidson's Will Davis returned to UNC Finley Golf Course early Tuesday to put the finishing touches on a one-under 69 in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Chapel Hill Men's Golf Regional.
After opening with a six-over 76, Davis was even par on his second 18 through 16 holes when play was halted Monday evening due to darkness. When play resumed at 7:30 a.m. this morning, Davis (+5) made par on the 17th before closing with a birdie on the long finishing hole.
With rain forecasted over the next two days, tournament officials made the decision to play as many holes as possible Monday with hopes of completing the entire 54 holes by Wednesday.
The third and final round is scheduled to restart at 7:30 a.m.
Ranked 179th in the most recent National Rankings, Davis started to settle in early in his second round playing holes six through 16 in two-under highlighted by an eagle and two birdies.
Davis joins Jack Lang (2017, 2019), Richard Fountain (2011, 2013, 2014), Rusty Boyd (1973) and Mike Spann (1967-69) as the only Wildcats to participate in the NCAA Regional as an individual competitor.
A junior from Jacksonville, Fla., Davis is coming off a third-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championships. The two-time (2023, 2024) all-conference performer finished with a 54-hole total of 209 (-7) for his fourth Top-3 showing of the 2023-24 campaign.
Davis, who picked up his first career individual title in the fall at the USF Invitational, has a 70.50 stroke average this year, highlighted by 22 sub-par rounds.
Named A-10 Rookie of the Year in 2022, Davis competed in the last two NCAA Regionals (Palm Beach Gardens & Las Vegas) as a result of Davidson's automatic bids as conference champions.
East Tennessee State (-23) leads the 13-team field by three strokes over Clemson. The Tar Heels (-19) are four back, followed by Baylor (-11) and Georgia Tech (-11).
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will compete at the National Championships. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
The 2024 National Championships will be hosted by the University of Texas at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa May 24-29.
