CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After opening the 2024 NCAA Chapel Hill Men's Golf Regional with a six-over 76, Davidson's Will Davis was even par on his second round through 16 holes when play was halted due to darkness.
With rain and storms expected over the next two days, tournament officials made the decision to play as many holes as possible Monday with hopes of completing the entire 54-hole event by Wednesday.
The resumption of round two is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. The third round, weather permitting, will not begin prior to 9:30 a.m.
The event hosted by North Carolina is being played on the Par 70, 7,084-yard UNC Finley Golf Course layout.
Ranked 179th in the most recent National Rankings, Davis (+6) started to settle in early in his second round playing holes six through 16 in two-under highlighted by an eagle and two birdies.
Davis joins Jack Lang (2017, 2019), Richard Fountain (2011, 2013, 2014), Rusty Boyd (1973) and Mike Spann (1967-69) as the only Wildcats to participate in the NCAA Regional as an individual competitor.
A junior from Jacksonville, Fla., Davis is coming off a third-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championships. The two-time (2023, 2024) all-conference performer finished with a 54-hole total of 209 (-7) for his fourth Top-3 showing of the 2023-24 campaign.
Davis, who picked up his first career individual title in the fall at the USF Invitational, has a 70.50 stroke average this year, highlighted by 22 sub-par rounds.
Named A-10 Rookie of the Year in 2022, Davis competed in the last two NCAA Regionals (Palm Beach Gardens & Las Vegas) as a result of Davidson's automatic bids as conference champions.
East Tennessee State (-21) leads the 13-team field by three strokes over Clemson. The Tar Heels (-13) are eight back followed by Baylor (-11), Long Beach State (-10) and Georgia Tech (-10).
The Tigers' Calahan Keever holds the top spot on the individual leaderboard at 10-under.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will compete at the National Championships. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
The 2024 National Championships will be hosted by the University of Texas at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa May 24-29.
