RICHMOND, VA. - The Davidson women's tennis team had its five-game winning streak come to an end after narrowly falling 4-3 on the road in Atlantic 10 action against Richmond Sunday.
The conference loss moves the Wildcats record to 10-5 overall and and even 2-2 in league play.
"Today was a tough battle against a solid team," said head coach Susanne Depka. "We came up short, losing the doubles point. We needed to do a better job of making them play and not giving away so many free points. We turned it around quickly in singles and competed well. They were just a little better than us today in some spots. I continue to be proud of this group for staying mentally tough and making it a close match after the doubles. I look forward to getting back on court and working on some areas that will help us against George Washington on Friday."
The Spiders started the day strong by sweeping the doubles matches in No. 3, No. 1, No. 2 order of finish. Emma Heiderscheit and Olivia Hooper on court two fought from being down but could not secure the comeback win, falling 6-4.
Heiderscheit got it done for the 'Cats in singles with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over her opponent to knot the team score 1-1.
Richmond pulled away to a 3-1 advantage over Davidson with two-bout victories on courts six and five respectively. Savanna Kollock battled closely in the No. 3 spot to a narrow 7-5, 7-5 loss. Despite the Spiders clinching the match point, both Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges forced their matches into three sets.
Patel, after splitting the first two matches 6-4, 3-6, closed the door on her opponent dropping just two games in the third set to an eventual 6-2 win on court four.
Porges took the opening bout 6-4 before dropping a tight 7-5 second set to force three at the No. 1 spot. The junior played even with her opponent for most of the third set before falling behind 4-5. Porges pulled out heroics via three combo-winners to knot the score 5-5. Porges was able to nail the remainder of her targets in order to secure the 7-5 match win.
Davidson continues its league slate of matches when it hosts George Washington on the Davidson Tennis Courts 3 p.m. March 29.
