Men's 800 Free Relay Takes Bronze, Sets Record

HAMPTON, Va. — A bronze medal performance and a school record — both by the men's 800 free relay unit — helped the Davidson swimming and diving teams make a splash on the first day of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Hampton Aquaplex.

The 800 free relay team of Ben McClain, Mitch McClain, Fletcher Smith and Dylan Felt swam to third in 6:28.22. That's good enough for a Davidson record, and it was also better than the previous A-10 mark.

Wednesday's limited action, an appetizer for the full courses to come the next three days, included just two men's and women's relays and men's one-meter diving.

Diver Ben Cutforth reached the A final and took seventh with a score of 283.25.

The women's 200 medley relay team of Leah Sandock, Anna Newman, Chale Jacks and Martha Tripsa placed sixth (1:40.82).

Thursday's action begins with 10 a.m. prelims and concludes with 6:30 p.m. finals. Events include the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, women's one-meter diving and the 200 free relay.
