Heffner Climbs into Lead with Record Round; ‘Cats Three Back

RICHMOND, Va. – Capped by an eagle on his final hole, Davidson's Alex Heffner fired a school and tournament-record 10-under 62 in Monday's second round to climb into a share of the individual lead after 36 holes of the 2023 VCU Shootout.
After opening with a 69, Heffner got things rolling in the afternoon with 7 birdies through 12 holes, then another on 18 before closing with a 3 on his final hole, the 564-yard Par 5 first. In all, the two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year finished the day with an eagle and 14 birdies.
Heffner and James Madison's Daniel Cheng lead the 84-player field by two shots at 13-under.
As a team, Davidson (-24 | 552) posted three sub-par rounds in the afternoon to shoot a 16-under 272 and move within three strokes of the lead, held by JMU (-27).
Coming off a third-place showing in the Wildcats' season opener, Joshua Stewart (136 | -8) continued his impressive play with consecutive rounds of 68 to currently sit in a tie for sixth, five back.
Davidson's Will Davis (139 | -5) bounced back with a 5-under 67 on his second 18 to join his teammates inside the Top-15.
Freshmen Will Tharin (147 | T-62nd) and Benjamin Newfield (151 | T-75th) are also in the Wildcats' lineup, while Davis Sayman (143 | T-41st) is competing as an individual.
Tuesday's third and final round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
