AMHERST, Mass. – Megan Burkholder turned in a record-breaking performance and came home with a silver medal in the pole vault at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday. In preliminary track events, five 'Cats qualified for tomorrow's finals.

George Mason leads the team standings after day one with 68 points, and Davidson is ninth with eight points.

Burkholder, a junior from Cozad, Nebraska battled down to the wire in the women's pole vault championships during the afternoon session. After Burkholder began at a height of 3.48 and 3.63 meters, she easily cleared both heights on her first two runs. When the bar was raised to 3.78 meters, the third-year vet cleared it on her third try to stay alive.

The event came down to Burkholder, UMass's Megan Frazee, and George Mason's Amber Askelson, who came in with the top mark of 3.82. After the Nebraska product cleared 3.78, all three competitors attempted to clear the bar at 3.88 meters. Askelson failed on all three tries while Burkholder and Frazee each got it on their final try. After both touched the bar at a mark of 3.98, it was lowered back to 3.88. Frazee cleared her first attempt and Burkholder missed the mark, but still took home a silver medal, a new school record, and possibly a qualifying mark for NCAA East Preliminaries.

In track prelims, five Wildcats moved on to Sunday's finals. Rachel Horowitz and Sophia Hood finished 3,4 and both ran personal-best times. Horowitz crossed the line in 55.26 while Hood smashed her previous-best time with a 55.57.

Kate Carnevale raised the bar in the 100-meters once again as she broke the school record with a time of 11.94 seconds. This was good for seventh-best in the prelims and qualifies her for Sunday's final.

Rounding out Saturday's qualifiers were two Wildcat hurdlers, Hannah Kanjian and Aleia Gisolfi-McCready. Kanjian snapped the school record in the 100-meter event after she cruised through the finish line in 14.26 seconds. This snapped Anna Davis' record of 14.37 from last season. Aleia Gisolfi-McCready set herself up for a showdown in the 400-meter hurdle finals after she finished in 1:01.61 to take the second-fastest time into Sunday.

Riley Dodd sits tenth in the heptathlon standings with 2,637 points. She took fifth in the high jump (1.59m) and ninth in the 200m (27.06) to lead her scoring.

The championships will conclude tomorrow with 16 track finals, six field event finals, and six relays.
