DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's tennis team returned to the court for the first time in 12 days and defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in non-conference action on Friday. Linden Patterson won the deciding singles match to give the Wildcats a 4-3 victory.
The team did a fantastic job with their focus today," said head coach Susanne Depka. "There was a ton of adversity and a lot of energy from both sides."
Davidson came out focused and dominated doubles play to begin action. Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges earned a 7-5 win in the top doubles pairing to get things going then, Emma Heiderscheit along with her partner, Franny Shea, cruised in the No. 2 doubles match with a 6-1 win. With the doubles point secured, Josie Schaffer and Savanna Kollock completed the sweep in doubles after taking down GWU in a 6-2 decision.
The Runnin' Bulldogs made things interesting when they won the first three singles pairings to grab a 3-1 lead. Two of those matches went to three sets after Heiderscheit and Patel battled their opponents to the wire, but came up just short.
In the final three matches, Savanna Kollock handled business in the No.4 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set triumph, and Franny Shea grinded out a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory in the No. 5 match.
With the team score knotted at 3-3, Linden Patterson came from behind in the final singles match after dropping the first set, 6-2. The Marietta, Georgia native finished strong behind a 6-3 win in the second set and a decisive 7-6 decision in the third set which favored the 'Cats.
"Linden did an amazing job with her focus and staying present," said Depka. "The team definitely deserved this one with all of their hard work mentally. I'm proud of them and look forward to tomorrow."
The Wildcats will return to the court tomorrow with an Atlantic 10 showdown against George Washington beginning at 9 a.m.
