
'Cats Hit the Road to Visit UMass

The Davidson baseball team will travel for the first time inside Atlantic 10 Conference play when it visits UMass this weekend.
 
The Wildcats are 16-11 overall after defeating Presbyterian 5-4 Tuesday night and have won eight of their previous nine games and 10 of their last 12. Davidson is one of five A-10 teams to go 2-1 in the first weekend of league play.
 
The series at UMass is just the second road series of the season for the Wildcats, who visited Coastal Carolina March 3-5 and have hosted six series (NJIT, Lafayette, Bryant, Marist, Tennessee Tech, Fordham).
 
The UMass meeting is the first of four A-10 road series the Wildcats will play in the 24-game league slate, also including trips to Rhode Island (April 21-23), George Washington (April 28-30) and Richmond (May 18-20).
 
 
LATEST ON THE 'CATS
• Junior outfielder Ryan Wilson continues to set the offensive standard in the A-10. He leads the league in home runs (13), on-base percentage (.515) slugging percentage (.854), OPS (1.369) and hit-by-pitches (19) and is tied for the league lead in runs (37). He's also second in the A-10 with 34 RBIs and is the team leader in average (.365, 5th in A-10), doubles (8) and total bases (82) and is tied with Henry Koehler with a team-best seven steals.
• Sophomore second baseman Jack Cotrone and freshman first baseman Michael O'Shaughnessy also rank among the A-10's top hitters. Cotrone is second in the league with nine home runs and a .693 slugging percentage and is third in OPS (1.161), while O'Shaughnessy is second with a .500 on-base percentage and fourth in OPS (1.142). Others ranking in the top five include shortstop Jacob Hinderleider (30 RBIs, 3rd), third baseman Nick Calero (28 walks, 2nd; 4 sacrifice flies, 3rd) and catcher Jacob Friend (22 walks, 4th).
• Senior right-handers Will Schomberg and Bennett Flynn are setting the tone on the mound.The team's Friday starter, Schomberg is 4-1 with a 2.80 ERA, which ranks second in the A-10, and leads the conference with a .176 batting average against. He's fifth in strikeouts (41).
Flynn, who is 3-0 with two saves and has been utilized as both a starter and reliever, ranks third in the league with 45 strikeouts and a .196 batting average against. His 3.62 ERA is sixth-best, and he's second in the league with 15 strikeouts looking.
• Schomberg and lefty Ryan Feczko will start the first two games of the UMass series, with Sunday's starter to-be-determined.
 
SERIES NOTES
The Wildcat-Minutemen series dates to 2014, Davidson's final year in the Southern Conference before joining the A-10.
 
The Wildcats are 10-3 against the Minutemen and have won five of the last six meetings, including all three games in Davidson last May.

UMass enters the weekend 4-16 overall and 0-3 in the A-10 after dropping three games at Saint Louis last weekend.
 
The Minutemen nearly upset No. 9 Boston College on Tuesday. UMass led the Eagles 5-0 after an inning and 10-2 after two before Boston College scored nine runs in the middle innings to win 13-12. First baseman Steve Luttazi led UMass, going 4-for-5, with a home run and three RBIs.
 
Luttazi is one of the top hitters in the conference and leads the league with a .439 average (25-for-57). He also ranks second in on-base percentage (.500) and OPS (1.167) and third in slugging percentage (.667).
 
Right-hander pitchers Max LeBlanc and Taylor Perrett are slated to start Friday and Saturday, respectively, with Sunday's starter to-be-determined.
