St. Simons Island, Ga. – Sparked by four sub-par rounds, the Davidson golf team fired a 13-under 271, to grab a share of the lead after the opening round of the 2023 Sea Palms Invitational Thursday.
The three-day/54-hole event is being played on the Par 71, 6,664-yard Sea Palms Resort layout.
Coming off a runner-up showing to begin the week, senior Brian Garrett continued his impressive play with a four-under 67 to sit tied for seventh with teammate Alex Heffner.
Heffner got it going early and was 7-under after 15 holes before a double bogey on the Par 5 16th hole.
Will Davis, last year's A-10 Rookie of the Year, signed for a 68 and will enter day two tied for 13th, while fellow Wildcat Joshua Stewart (-2) is one back tied for 20th.
Senior Ethan Hall (+1 | T-51) rounded out the Davidson starters.
Despite competing as individuals, the Wildcats also got impressive rounds from Price Miller and Jackson Bode, who both shot rounds of two-under 69. Davidson's Adam Lauer is also one of 120 competitors, he opened with a 75.
Davidson, which finished fourth at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto to begin its Spring Break swing earlier this week, recorded 29 birdies as a team and will share the overnight lead with Wright State, two clear of UCF.
The Golden Knights' Markus Braadlie is alone atop the individual leaderboard following a 64 (-7).
Friday's second round will begin at 7:10 a.m. The Wildcats will be paired with Jacksonville State, Bellarmine and Xavier off the 10th tee starting at 8:05 a.m.
