DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson's Jack Wiese and Mason Sheron have been named to the 2023 Academic All-Pioneer Football League First Team, while Brody Reina, Maxwell Weaver and Jonathan Hammond received second-team recognition, as announced by the conference Wednesday afternoon.
Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL squads in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-PFL consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, reach his second season academically and play at least one full season at his current institution.
For Wiese, a psychology major, it's his third straight first-team honor as the senior linebacker appeared in every contest this season and was a fixture on the Wildcats' special team units.
Sheron, who received honorable mention yesterday when all-conference teams were released, finished his sophomore campaign with 949 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, both ranking among the league's best.
Like Wiese, this marks the third consecutive year Hammond and Weaver received All-Academic nods.
No stranger to postseason honors, Hammond received his fourth (1st Team – 2021, 2023 | 2nd Team – 2020, 2022) all-conference recognition Tuesday. Named Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2020-21, the communications major will conclude his standout career ranked among the program's all-time leaders in sacks and tackles for loss.
A junior economics major from Moraga, Calif., Weaver appeared in every contest for the second consecutive season recording 12 catches for 236 yards and three touchdowns.
Also named honorable mention for his performance on the field, Reina led Davidson receivers with four touchdowns and a 21.93 average per catch, while finishing with 15 grabs for 329 yards.
