'Cats Continue Homestand with Meeting vs. App State

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's basketball team carries a three-game winning streak and its best start in program history onto its home court Wednesday to host Appalachian State for a 7 p.m. tip.

SERIES HISTORY...
Appalachian State claims a 28-24 lead in the all-time series against Davidson. More recently, the Wildcats are 6-4 in the last 10 meetings between the two squads. 

When the 'Cats and Mountaineers faced off a season ago on Nov. 27, 2022, App State earned a narrow 84-82 nail biting victory on their home court. 

Davidson had four players in double-digit scoring with Elle Sutphin leading the way with 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Following was Suzi-Rose Deegan with a 20-point 10-point double-double while tacking on three assists and one steal. Maddie Plank tallied 19 points with seven rebounds and three assists while Mallorie Haines totaled 11 points, three rebounds and one steal.

LAST TIME OUT...
Davidson moved to its most successful start in program history at 5-1 after its second-largest win of the season at 81-51 over Wofford Nov. 21 in John M. Belk Arena. Deegan scored a team-high 17 points while Millie Prior recorded her first career double-double at Davidson of 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and three blocks. 

AP POLL PRESENCE...
For the second week in a row, the Wildcats are part of the the talk within the Associated Press Top 25 Poll as they received votes again, this week having received multiple. 

AROUND THE ATLANTIC 10...
Prior to the start of conference play, the Wildcats currently land fifth in the Atlantic 10 behind the remaining two undefeated teams George Mason (7-0) and Saint Joseph's (5-0) and 6-1 teams Richmond and VCU. 

Davidson as a team ranks within the top five in the conference in numerous categories including as it is third in free throw percentage (79.4), 3-point percentage (36.1) and 3-pointers per game (8.0), fourth in both scoring margin (+14.5) and scoring (70.8) as well as fifth in assist to turnover ratio (0.91). 

DEFENSE WINS GAMES... 
The Wildcats have proven to be a defensive powerhouse as they are third in turnover margin (+4.0), fourth in blocks per game (4.2), fourth in steals per game (9.5) and fifth in turnovers forced per game (18.7). 

Contributing largely in the solid defensive efforts is Prior who is second in the league in blocks (11) and second in blocks per game (1.8). Sutphin and Issy Morgan have also proved to have quick hands as they each have 10 steals on the year with Prior having nine of her own. Davidson has posted just two contest this year in which it did not tally at least 10 steals. 

TAKING CARE OF THE BALL...
Entering its seventh game of the year, Davidson has had just one contest where it has made more than 15 miscues. On the opposite end of the court the 'Cats have forced their competition into a total of 112 including a season-high 28 against USC Upstate. 

NO PLACE LIKE HOME...
Davidson has compiled five consecutive winning seasons at home (8-5, 10-6, 5-4, 7-6, 6-4) from the 2018-19 campaign to the 2022-23 season. The Wildcats have averaged 65.9 points per game inside of Belk Arena over the last five seasons. Davidson is already off to an undefeated (3-0) start this year on its home court. 

PROGRAM BESTS...
With their win over Wofford, The Wildcats' 5-1 record is the best start they have gotten off to in program history. 

WILDCAT ROSTER...
Davidson enters the week with three players averaging double-figure points in Sutphin (13.8), Dunn (13.5) and Deegan (11.7) while Morgan and Prior each average 9.7 ppg. 

Charlise Dunn paces the 'Cats on the boards with 6.5 rpg followed by Prior with 6.0. 

Morgan has shot the ball efficiently from all areas of the court as she has team-highs of .594 from the floor, .636 from 3-point range and .929 from the charity stripe.

LAST TIME OUT...
The Mountaineers picked up a pair of wins while playing in the Thanksgiving Basketball Clasico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. App State defeated Furman 68-63 Thursday and Binghamton 68-57 Friday. 

A LOOK AT THE MOUNTAINEERS...
Collectively, App State averages 66.2 points and 41.0 rebounds per game while shooting .353 from the floor, .208 from 3-point range and .716 from the foul line. 

Individually, the Mountaineers are led by the duo of Faith Alston and Emily Carver who are the lone players to average double-figure points. Alston tallies 14.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.2 apg and 2.2 spg while Carver collects 14.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 2.6 spg and 1.2 apg. 

In the Wildcats and Mountaineers most recent meeting, Alston finished the contest with 18 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals while Carver totaled 12 points, five rebounds and one assist.

Davidson will remain home to contine the non-conference portion of its schedule when it hosts Longwood 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
