Wildcats Continue Action with Two-Game Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. - After a solid season opener against USC Upstate, the Davidson women's basketball team will begin a three-game ACC opponent swing when it welcomes Wake Forest to Belk Arena 1 p.m. Saturday before traveling to No. 16 North Carolina at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Wake Forest leads the all-time series over Davidson 10-3 dating back to 1975. The Deacons are currently on a seven-game winning streak over the 'Cats. The Wildcats are 2-2 when facing Wake at home with their last win being an 82-75 victory on Nov. 17, 1998. The 'Cats have kept the series close as of late having lost by no more than 10 in five of the last six games.

Davidson opened the season win an 86-51 win over USC Upstate Nov. 7 in Belk Arena. The Wildcats have now won four of their last six season openers.
STRONG SEASON OPENER...
As a team, the Wildcats looked comfortable on the court in the season opener. Collectively, the team shot 50.9 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from long range and 73.1 percent from the charity stripe. The 'Cats had stellar shooting performances in the first and third quarter at 69.2 and 62.5 percent, respectively.
Additionally, Davidson played dominant defense and forced the Spartans into 28 turnovers. The 'Cats tallied 15 steals and six blocks while scoring 35 of their points due to USC Upstate miscues.
Helping lead the way for a dominant defensive performance was Maddie Plank with nine rebounds and Millie Prior with three steals and two blocks.
DUNN'S DAVIDSON DEBUT...
After transferring from Virginia Tech, sophomore Charlise Dunn opened her Davidson career by leading all scorers with 17 points in addition to tallying three rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Dunn showed her sharp shooting abilities and was 5-for-7 from the floor (.714), 3-for-5 from 3-point range (.603) and 4-for-5 (.800) from the foul line.
RETURNER RESUME...
Entering the weekend, four returners from last year's roster have a double-digit scoring performance under their belt in Suzi-Rose Deegan (16), Issy Morgan (14), Elle Sutphin (14) and Mallorie Haines (12).
Each veteran was able to bring something different to the table. Deegan led the returners, tacking on a 60 percent shooting performance and four assists to her stat line. Sutphin aided with four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Morgan led the team with four steals, while Haines went 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
FRESHMEN INVOLVEMENT...
The Davidson newcomers were given great chances to show their potential in the Wildcats' first game of the season. Chloe Oliver led the freshmen class with six points, four rebounds and one assist. Katie Donovan, in a freshmen-high of 23 minutes, tallied two points, one rebound and one steal, while Sylvia Jackson rounded out newcomer appearances with one assist.

The Deacons earned a 75-65 win over SoCon member Wofford College at home. As a team, Wake Forest shot .441 from the floor, .276 from long range and .538 from the free throw line.
Pacing the offense for the Deacons was Malaya Cowles and Kate Deeble, who each tallied 19 points in the season opener, with Cowles bringing in seven rebounds and Deeble five. Elise Williams led the defense with eight rebounds while also dishing out six assists and making two steals to go along with 14 points.
Kaia Harrison and Alex Scruggs are the only Deacons to have played in the most recent contest with Davidson on Nov. 28, 2020. Scruggs totaled seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal while Harrison tallied six points, and one assist.

The Tar Heels opened the season with a 102-49 victory over Gardner-Webb Nov. 8 in the Carmichael Arena. For the game, UNC shot .425 overall, .270 from 3-point range and .720 from the charity stripe while holding a +19 margin in rebounds (52-33).
UNC is led on the offensive end of the floor by Indya Nivar who scored 17 points in the season debut to go along with 11 rebounds, two seals, one assist and one block. Also posting a double-double effort for the Tar Heels was Alyssa Ustby, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds with six assists and four steals. Through one contest, UNC had six players end the game in double-digit points.
