Win Over Duquesne Highlights Second Day of Richmond Duals

HAMPTON, VA. — Eleven event wins helped the Davidson women's swimming and diving team top Duquesne 196-101 on Saturday, the second and final day of the Richmond Duals at the Hampton Aquaplex.
Just as they did Friday against Richmond, Anna Newman and Sylvia Stewart-Bates won multiple events to lead the way, while Cynthia Huang also joined the two-win club.
"The women's lineups were fun all weekend," said Davidson coach John Young, noting how Newman, Stewart-Bates and the divers helped the Wildcats nearly upset Richmond Friday. "We built today's lineup around the same crew, and we learned a lot about our potential as the 'Cats separated themselves from Duquesne, thanks to contributions throughout the lineup. Sylvia raced all the long stuff and made it look easy. Anna went undefeated in the breaststrokes, and Annica Valmassei and Elle Jacobsen and the divers crushed it. It was really a delightful team effort today, against a perpetual A-10 title contender."
Stewart-Bates won the 500 free (5:08.07) and 1,650 free (17:28.81), while Newman won the 100 breast and 200 breast in 1:05.58 and 2:22.53, respectively.
Huang touched first in the 200 fly (2:10.01) and the 400 IM (4:33.36).
Other individual wins came from Martha Tripsa (50 free, 24.23), Addy Donaldson (100 free, 53.34) and Chale Jacks (100 fly, 57.41). Jacks, Donaldson, Tripsa and Leah Sandock won the 200 free relay (1:36.01), while Newman, Jacks, Tripsa and Ann Thompson won the 400 medley relay (3:53.43).
"Rani Greer and Sylvia kicked us off with terrific miles," said Young. "Kelsa Dator stepped up in the 200 both days. Cynthia locked down the 200 fly and 400 IM and joined Ann and Leah and Nora Ratmeyer in neutralizing an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 200 back. Martha and Addy and Chale all grabbed nice wins."
Completing their two-day meet with George Mason, the Davidson men posted three victories (after four on Friday) in a 214-190 team loss.
Dylan Felt won the 500 free (4:32.92) and swam with Ben McClain, Ian Brann and Guil Ware to a 200 free relay win (1:23.50).
James Gourlay had the top 1-meter diving score (241.85).
"We raced hard this weekend," said Davidson coach John Young. "The men took a tight meet to bed yesterday, but were on the wrong side of too many touches today. I was especially pleased with our relays all weekend, and with swims by Jeremy Kemp and Miles Charles, Zach Jones, Ben, Henry Logan, and Dylan. Remarkable for Dylan to be 15:42 in the mile and 20.8 in the 50 in the same weekend ... he's a special one."
