COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Davidson men's track and field team opened the 2023 indoor campaign at the Carolina Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina on Friday. Davidson was led by Jayden Smith, who set a new program record in the 60-meter hurdles, as well as Nathan Stewart and Jack Curtin.
"Jayden continues to make us all proud as he mixes it up with the best in the NCAA. Today was a solid opener and is a good sign of things to come," said head coach Renny Waldron.
Jayden Smith started his indoor season with a bang after he qualified for the 60-meter hurdle finals in a time of 7.85. This snapped Jordan Benson's mark of 7.94 which he ran back in December at the JDL Early Bird Invitational. Smith entrenched his name further into the record book with a third-place finish and a new-best mark of 7.78. Coming into today, this time ranks tied for tenth nationally.
Also in the 60-meter hurdles, Isaac Bynum set a new personal-best with a time of 8.20 in the preliminary heat.
In the triple jump, junior Jack Curtin set a new personal-best and grabbed a third-place finish with his jump of 14.36 meters. This mark surpassed his previous best of 14.27 which he set last April at the Charlotte Invitational.
Sophomore Nathan Stewart began the day by posting a personal-best time in the 3,000 meters. The Auburn, Alabama native ran the top time in his heat, posting an 8:47.94. This bested his previous best time of 8:55.04 from December of 2021.
The track and field squad will conclude the weekend tomorrow with field event finals beginning at 10:00 a.m. and track event finals starting at 1:00 p.m.
