'Cats Drop Opener to Chanticleers

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team fell 3-0 to Coastal Carolina in its season opener at the Seahawk Volleyball Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats struggled to find an offensive rhythm against the Chanticleers, who hit .292 on the day compared to Davidson's .042 attacking percentage.
Freshmen Emma Slusser and Jackie Bardin had seven and five kills, respectively, in their first collegiate match, while Bardin held a team-high .556 attacking percentage. Junior Sola Omonije added five kills of her own, in addition to four digs, while fellow middle blocker Anela Davis came up with five total blocks.
The Chanticleers jumped out to an 11-4 lead in set one, backed by a .345 attacking percentage at the net. Four kills from Bardin and timely hitting from Slusser, Isabel Decker and Davis would allow the 'Cats to stay within four points, 16-12, before Coastal scored six of the next seven points to secure the 25-16 first set victory.
Davidson took an early 2-0 lead in the second, thanks to steady serving by Sophia Hritz, but Coastal Carolina sparked another offensive surge and pulled away to a 14-6 lead. Bardin continued her solid hitting day by putting an end to the Chanticleers' run, with the Wildcats' first kill of set two, while Davis and Slusser combined for back-to-back kills, shortening the deficit to 17-10.
Despite trailing 2-0 in the match, Davidson's Omonije opened up the third set with a pair of kills, dished by Xuan Nguyen (14 assists). Slusser added two more kills of her own, while fellow freshmen Kayla Davis and Anna Withee added kills to the scoresheet, allowing Davidson to keep it a two-point, 15-13 game, before the Chanticleers closed out the match on a 10-4 run.

The Wildcats will return to the courts tomorrow for a pair of matches against host UNCW at 9 a.m. and Virginia Tech at 3 p.m.
