CHARLOTTE – The Davidson lacrosse team cruised to its fifth straight win of the 2022 season and improved to 5-0 after dominating the Winthrop Eagles for 60 minutes during the Crown Lacrosse Classic on Saturday afternoon, 20-9.
Sophomore Julianne Carey dominated on the draw control and led the 'Cats offensively with five goals and six points. Erin Cooke trailed Carey with five points from two goals and a game-high three assists while Gianna New, Emily Weld and Grace Fahey each had a three-point game.
The start of the non-conference match up got off to a tight start, as senior Weld put the Wildcats on the board early, netting an unassisted goal in the fourth minute of play before the Eagles settled the score at 1-1 less than a minute later. Freshman Josie Lambert got Davidson back in front with her third goal of the season, while Winthrop tied things up once again after a give-and-go look from Eagles Jamira Mashore and Katie Witmer.
With four minutes remaining in the first quarter, and the score tied up at two goals apiece, Cooke and Fahey combined for three-straight goals, putting the Wildcats up 5-2 and handing them the lead for good.
Davidson continued to outscore the Eagles over the next 45 minutes of play 15-7, including a 5-3 second quarter that saw New, Jane DiGregorio and Carey find the back of the net.
After a 10-5 lead by halftime, the Wildcats netted two straight goals to kick off the final half with another strike from Cooke and a behind-the-back dazzler from Carey. The Eagles would only pull within five points of the Wildcats, on two occasions, but with a seven-goal third period, Davidson earned a running clock for the majority of the fourth quarter and cruised to the Saturday victory.
The Wildcats will return to play on Saturday, March 12 to take on Radford on the road. Opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
