NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson College lacrosse players Julianne Carey, Noelle Cegielski and Amanda Monahan were named to the Atlantic 10's Preseason All-Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
In addition to the All-Conference announcement, the Wildcats were also picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches poll after concluding the 2021 season with a semifinal appearance in the A-10 Championship Tournament.
"It's exciting to see three of our players earn recognition on the preseason A-10 team, as there are so many talented players on our team and in our conference," said Head Coach Kim Wayne. "We accomplished a lot last year, and Amanda, Julianne and Noelle all played key roles in those accomplishments. I would expect to see the same, if not more, from them this upcoming season."
Now a sophomore, Carey made an immediate splash in the league during her freshman year. The attacker garnered seven A-10 Rookie of the Week titles, set a new conference record for the most weekly honors collected by a freshman in a single season and took home the league's Rookie of the Year award. The Pennsylvania native wrapped up her rookie campaign with a team-high 71 draw controls to pair with 26 goals and 15 assists. Her success on the draw was also top-3 among all A-10 players at the end of the 2021 season.
Leading Davidson's defense heading into the 2022 campaign, Cegielski also collected A-10 Rookie of the Week honors last season, along with an All-Rookie Team selection at the conclusion of the year. A Yorktown Heights, NY native, Cegielski finished her freshman season with 25 ground balls, third most on the team, and played a pivotal role in Davidson's clearing unit, which ended the regular season 224-269 (.833).
Monahan returns as the Wildcats' netminder, seeing nearly 792 minutes in cage last season. The Massachusetts native collected three A-10 Defensive Player of the Week titles while appearing and starting in all 15 games. As a sophomore, Monahan made 127 saves and finished the season with a .483 save percentage while leading the 'Cats to an 11-win season, including the team's first win over a ranked team in program history.
Carey, Cegielski, Monahan and the rest of the Wildcats will open up its 2022 season on Saturday, Feb. 12 against High Point University. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
