BOONE, N.C. - Davidson women's tennis completed a two-match road swing on Saturday, taking down the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 4-2, in an afternoon battle. The 'Cats move to 2-2 on the season after splitting the weekend overall, 1-1.
"This match was a tremendous effort by everyone," head coach Susanne Depka said. "We started out with lots of energy for the doubles and played aggressive, then took that into singles and played with no fear. We learned from yesterday and it paid off. We continue to work hard on our mental focus and, if each match we get better, we put ourselves in positions to succeed.
"Today was an improvement from yesterday and I'm proud of their courage."
Davidson earned the doubles point as Josie Schaffer and Kavya Patel took down their opponents in a battle. All even at 6-6, the 7-2 tiebreaker went to the 'Cats and Davidson walked off the court with a 7-6 win. At the two spot, Elizabeth Truluck and Mira Gladstone defeated the Mountaineer pair, 6-3.
As for the singles matches, Emma Heiderscheit was first to finish and first on the board for Davidson, defeating Poggi of App State in two sets, 6-1, 6-3. Patel fought to a three set victory, dominating the last set, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Gladstone brought home another win for the 'Cats, earning a two set, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Schaffer and Truluck dropped their singles match while Franny Shea and her opponent - who had battled through two sets - did not finish.
UP NEXT
Davidson will host the Richmond Spiders on Saturday, Feb. 19 for a noon matchup.
