Davidson senior swimmer Mitchell Stanek has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the NCAA has announced.
Stanek is one of 21 male scholar-athletes from across the country and multiple divisions to be honored for the Winter 2020-21 period.
"I'm delighted to see Mitchell's ability and accomplishments recognized by the NCAA," said Davidson coach John Young. "He has been an extraordinary teammate and captain, a great leader in and out of the pool, and an embodiment of the balance we hope our Wildcats achieve in the classroom and pool. I am outrageously proud of him and grateful for him."
The Asheville native and Economics major plans to attend Vanderbilt University's Owen School of Management to pursue his Masters of Accountancy. Stanek said the one-year program will provide him with the technical accounting skills he needs to launch his career with one of the "Big Four" accounting firms.
"It is my hope that my Vanderbilt master's degree will complement my Davidson liberal arts background and further prepare me for a life of leadership and service in the business world," said Stanek. "Receiving the scholarship means I can attend Vanderbilt and pursue my professional goals at significantly lower cost. I am incredibly honored and grateful to have been selected for this award. The opportunity to be selected would not have been possible without the assistance of my professors, my coaches, and athletics director Chris Clunie."
Stanek has been a significant contributor for the Wildcats in the water. He finished his career with multiple spots on the program's all-time performers' list, including in the 200 breaststroke (2nd, 2:00.12), the 400 IM (3rd, 3:56.93) and the 200 IM (6th, 1:51.75).
At the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championships, Stanek took fifth in the 200 breast and sixth in the 400 IM and helped the 800 freestyle relay place fifth.
