FAIRFAX, Va. – Men's track and field set themselves up well for success on Sunday after a strong opening day Saturday at George Mason Stadium.
Sophomore Bryce Anthony cruised to win his heat of the 400-meter hurdles and narrowly broke Sean Caveney's record (52.25), stopping the clock at 52.24 seconds. Anthony and teammates, junior Cory Gaither (53.28) and freshman Isaac Bynum (53.30) will all be back for Sunday's finals. Both Gaither (14.58 seconds) and Bynum (14.78) posted new personal best times in the 110-meter hurdles to advance to the finals in that event, as well.
Senior and former indoor 800-meter champion Daniel Alvarez-Orlachia played the tactical game and outlasted everyone in his heat to advance to the finals.
Freshman Josh Hardin took third in his heat and made the finals of the 400-meter. The Bluff City, Tenn., native stopped the clock at 48.76 seconds.
Junior Paul Mullinax posted his second-best hammer throw of the season, marking a toss of 45.67-meters (149-10). Sophomore sprinter Nick Tompkins equaled a personal-best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.15 seconds.
