Field Hockey Will Host and Travel This Weekend
4/9/2021 12:43:00 PM | Field Hockey
Two rematches await the Davidson field hockey team this weekend.
The Wildcats will play an Atlantic 10 Conference home contest against VCU Saturday at noon, then travel to face Liberty in non-conference action Sunday at 2 p.m.
The game with VCU is the final scheduled contest at Belk Turf Field this season for the Wildcats, who are 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the A-10.
"Going into this season, we had no idea whether we'd get to play any games, much less be looking at completing our entire home slate," said Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. "For that fact alone, I am so proud of the team and the work they have done to keep themselves and each other safe and healthy. This game is also exciting because it is a rematch of an excellent conference opponent. We are so pumped up to play them on our home turf."
The Wildcats will have a quick turnaround and make the trip to Lynchburg, Va., to play the 12-2 Flames, who won 3-1 in Davidson in the Feb. 14 season opener.
"We know it will be a battle to travel after having played at home the day before, but we are also fired up for that rematch," said Almquist. "This year with COVID, there are so many unique parts to season: playing in the spring, playing almost exclusively regional opponents and playing some of them more than once. It is an interesting and new challenge for all of us, and we are grateful for the opportunity."
Davidson is coming off a 4-0 A-10 win at Saint Louis last Saturday. Julia Smith, Corynne Hammit, Anna Sharp and Valerie Hajek scored, and Cato Roell notched her first career shutout.
Hajek and Nellie Turnage lead the Wildcats with three goals apiece, while Hajek and Lena Stiebing each have a team-high seven points.
