Field Hockey Pushes Unbeaten VCU in 2-1 Loss
4/10/2021 4:07:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Davidson field hockey team battled unbeaten VCU to a 2-1 contest in Atlantic 10 action Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
Despite the loss, Davidson coach Zoe Almquist saw her team play "some of the best 60 minutes we have put together this season."
"Today was such a battle, and I thought we played our hearts out," said Almquist. "It is so tough to be so close, and not have things fall our way. But I know we are right there, and that's why it stung so much."
Now 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the A-10, Davidson struck first Saturday with a goal by Corynne Hammit at the 6:09 mark of the second period. Nellie Turnage went down the middle and shot, and Hammit was there to finish with a redirection.
VCU evened the score at 1-1 with a Litiana Field goal off a penalty corner with 1:27 left in the half and took the lead on Janne Wetzel's goal 3:57 into the third quarter.
The Rams tested Davidson keeper Cato Roell throughout with nine corners and 13 shots, including 11 on goal. The freshman responded, however, with one of her top performances.
"I saw stick saves, hand saves and split saves, and, in particular, back-to-back saves on a corner and then rebound that was amazing," said Almquist. "She was powerful and had great presence."
