Q&A with Volleyball's Lauryn Albold '22

I was drawn to Davidson because of the opportunity to play Division I athletics without compromising my education and post-graduate goals. I was also drawn to the small class sizes and small-school feel.
What made you choose Davidson over other opportunities?
I chose Davidson over other opportunities because of the emphasis they placed on excelling both in sports and in the classroom. You get the facilities and competition of a DI school, while also getting a good education from a reputable school.
If you were speaking to a recruit, what would you tell them about the highlights and challenges of being a scholar-athlete at Davidson?
There are highlights and challenges to being a scholar-athlete at any school, and Davidson is no different. For me, one of the biggest highlights is the friendships that I have made with other scholar-athletes here at Davidson. As scholar-athletes, we are going through a lot of the same experiences and can understand and support each other. One of the challenges of being a scholar-athlete at Davidson is balancing school and athletics. Sometimes it can get overwhelming, but there is always a huge support system there to help you when things get hard.
Philanthropic gifts from alumni, families and friends of Davidson Athletics help fund our 21 Division I programs at Davidson. What does that support mean to you and how do you believe support for your program has enhanced your experience and that of your teammates and program overall?
Without philanthropic support from alumni, families and friends of Davidson Athletics, my experience would not be possible. Their gifts enable scholar-athletes like me to accomplish our dream of playing DI athletics in college. I believe these gifts have significantly enhanced the capabilities of our program, providing us with the gear we need to compete, upgrading our travel and allowing for more competitive recruiting so the program can continue to be as competitive as possible in the future.
You've been a scholar-athlete at Davidson during unexpected and challenging circumstances in our country and around the world. How has that shaped who you are now versus who you were when you first came to campus, and how do you think it has affected the direction your career path is taking?
These unexpected circumstances have definitely shaped my character as both a student and an athlete. The biggest lesson I have learned has been how to overcome adversity. From our season being postponed to multiple teammates being out of practice for quarantine-related reasons, I have had to learn to find ways to adapt and embrace change. I think this experience will help me after I graduate Davidson because change can happen at any time, and learning how to adapt to unexpected changes will be beneficial in any career path I choose.
What interests/paths do you plan to pursue after Davidson?
I am interested in healthcare and plan to attend school to become a Physician Assistant.
Favorite memory as a Wildcat?
My favorite memory as a Wildcat is going to New York to play Fordham and going to a Broadway show with my teammates.
