NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson first baseman Ryan Wilson has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The honor is the first for the freshman from Durham.
"Ryan has played at a high level since he got on campus," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "He's a mature person that competes and plays hard at all times. This is a nice recognition for him and is well-earned."
This past week, Wilson hit a team-best .500 (6-for-12) and led the team with seven RBIs as the Wildcats went 4-0 and extended their win streak to seven. He also led the team with a .625 on-base percentage, while slugging .833.
In Tuesday's win over Wofford at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, Wilson broke a scoreless tie with a three-run home run to left-center in the third inning. He drove in three runs against North Alabama on Thursday, via a two-RBI single in the second and a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. And he went 3-for-4 with an RBI-double on Friday against the Lions.
This season, Wilson has started all 25 games at first base and hit in the top three spots in the order. He is hitting .289 with three home runs, five doubles, a triple and 21 RBIs and leads the team with seven stolen bases. He's drawn 12 walks and leads the A-10 with 12 hit-by-pitches.
Wilson and the Wildcats have won 11 of their last 12 games.
