‘Cats Bounce Back with Strong Second Round at Irish Creek

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – After struggling to find consistency in its opening round, Davidson bounced back with the second lowest total of the afternoon, to move into a tie for fifth place at the 2021 Irish Creek Intercollegiate hosted by the Wildcats and cross-county rival Charlotte.
Davidson, which carded a 299 on a cold and windy Friday morning, fired a season-low 283 on its second 18 to climb four spots up the team leaderboard into a four-way tie, just six swings out of second place.
Thanks to a second-round three-under 68, freshman Alex Heffner (E | T-7th) leads the way for the 'Cats, while sophomore Brian Garrett (+1 | T-9th) is one back of his teammate at 143 (70-73).
Like Heffner, junior Viraj Garewal (+3 | T-17th) posted a sub-par score in the afternoon to join his fellow Wildcats in the Top-20.
Clayton Tribus (156 | T-71) and Alex Ross (157 | T-74) are also in the Davidson lineup this weekend, while Ben Moreland (150 | T-53), Ethan Hall (157 | T-74), Dean Naime (160 | 80th) and Cole Walter (164 | 83rd) are competing as individuals.
UNCW holds the top spot in the team standings at 570 (+2), six shots ahead of VCU (+8). On the tightly contested leaderboard, just 10 shots separate second and 10th place.
The Seahawks' Sander Akeren (-8) leads the 84-player field with a five-shot advantage over Eduardo Carrete (-3) of Jacksonville.
Tomorrow's third and final round will begin with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
